The seat goes to the operator a Chair can see.
A director you rated as competent, not brilliant, just told the Board he has an agent drafting the risk paper you used to write by hand.
Every senior operator is now asking the same thing in private, and saying none of it over dinner. Do I orchestrate the agents, or do I get orchestrated out.
75% of executives expect AI agents to sit inside their own senior leadership within 5 years. 95% already say roles and team structures are changing because of it. That is not a far off forecast. That is the search consultant on your next call asking how you lead with AI, and hearing you improvise the answer.
The enemy in all this wears a friendly face. It is the reassurance doing the rounds, “AI will never replace leaders.”
True, and useless. It is the comfort that lets a brilliant operator sit still while the market refiles them under resistor without ever telling them. The seat goes to the leader, a Chair can see is the one running the machine.
That difference is the whole of it, and every exec in transition is standing in one of three bands right now.
Exposed. The operating record is real and the LikedIn profile says nothing about how you think in this new world. A Chair googles you before the intro call and finds a chronology of jobs from a decade the market has moved on from. You are invisible on the one axis a Board has started screening for.
Repositioning. You have begun to say it out loud. Where you have already put agents to work, what you refuse to hand them and why, how you hold judgement over automation. The standing is being rebuilt in public, where a search partner actually reads it.
Future proof. The Board does not wonder whether you belong in the AI era. Your name comes up when a remuneration committee wants someone who has already governed the thing everyone else is still nervous about. You are approached, rather than applying.
Nobody drifts from Exposed to Future proof by being an expert in your role. You were always credible in your position. The seat goes to the operator a Chair can find and trust on sight, and trust now includes this.
You have signed off multiple figure budgets and governed real risk through worse than this. The question is not whether you can lead through the agentic shift, you can. It is whether the one person deciding your next Board seat can tell that you already are.
